HOUSEBREAKING A NEW KITTEN
Kittens are fastidious and thus are pretty easy to housebreak and litter box train. Use these pointers:
- Get a litter box that has sides low enough for a kitten to climb in and out of.
- Place the litter box in a quiet area where the kitten will feel safe but is also in a place the kitten can get to quickly.
- Place a non-deodorizing, clumping type of cat litter in the box. Some kittens don’t like the litters with a strong scent and the clumping litter is much easier to keep clean.
- Place the kitten in the filled litter box and let it get used to it.
- For the first few weeks, try to place the kitten in the litter box regularly, especially after eating and sleeping.
- Praise your kitten when it uses the litter box.
- You may need more than one box in a large home and/or if you have other cats.
- CLEAN THE LITTERBOX REGULARLY!
- Keep the litter box away from the kitten’s food and water. Kittens won’t use the litter box if it is too close to its food and water.
Your kitten may not like a covered litter box. It may be best to use a box with no lid until your kitten is completely litter box trained.
